Suspension

Suspension seemed like such an innocent word. I usually think of an automobile's suspension system, particles floating in a fluid, or somebody getting a 5 day suspension from school.

Now suspension will always conjure up images like this (warning: disturbing!).

Apparently suspension is a fairly common activity in the body modification subcultures. There is even a FAQ.

But to show that there may not be much new under the sun in the realm of human wierdness they also have some background material.

Shades of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival. Don't ask, just Google. Pictures should only be viewed by people with strong stomachs. At least they've got a religious excuse.
I lived in Phuket -- pronounced 'pooket' so shuddup -- for two years, btw. I've seen the festival live. (Luckily, I have a strong stomach.)

Oh... and the Thai festival does have some connection to the Hindu practices mentioned in the background link. Even though the practice in the Thai festival is to suspend things from/through their bodies rather than the other way around.

Yeah, I think I was like 8 or 9 years old when I saw "A Man Called Horse", which has the scene where Richard Harris is hung by eagle claws through the chest muscles. That was enough for me to know I'd never do it.
