Some researchers at the Carnegie-Mellon University School of Computer Science have an answer for you!
Mores precisely, their study (PDF here) provides answers to this question:

You will, for instance, get a different answers depending how quickly you want to find out about an event or how much time you have to read blogs and posts.

NB: Many thanks to all the Friday Ark participants in 2006 who, I suspect, played an important role in Modulator's high ranking.
Posted by Steve on October 25, 2007Yes I believe that hosting/administering a carnival did play a role in the ranking.
I run (and often host) Haveil Havalim a blogging Carnival devoted to Judaism and Israel.
Dr. Sanity runs Carnival of the Insanities. And Watcher of Weasels (#4) runs something called the Watcher's Council, which could be called a restricted carnival.
Posted by Soccer Dad at October 25, 2007 12:31 PMI suspect you're on to something, gents. I manage I and the Bird, which Modulator so thoughtfully and consistently links to. Congrats all around!
Posted by Mike at October 25, 2007 12:35 PMThe presence of our blog, The Nose On Your Face, on this list should effectively destroy the credibility of this study.
Posted by RH Potfry at October 25, 2007 1:43 PMI am new to Modulator so I don't know much. But of course this feels like a top 100 site and it appears it is a top 10. I just opened a carnival this week. Let's see where I'll be in three years. Nice job!
Posted by PetMono at October 25, 2007 1:49 PMContratulations! You deserve the honor. I don't know enough math to critique the study, but I'm going to get my humans to consult some math nerds that they know.
