Here’s the qualifications of the new USAID director deputy assistant administrator:

More significant to the administration, perhaps, is the fact that Bonicelli is dean of academic affairs at tiny Patrick Henry College in rural Virginia. The fundamentalist institution’s motto is “For Christ and Liberty.” It requires that all of its 300 students sign a 10-part “statement of faith” declaring, among other things, that they believe “Jesus Christ, born of a virgin, is God come in the flesh;” that “Jesus Christ literally rose bodily from the dead”; and that hell is a place where “all who die outside of Christ shall be confined in conscious torment for eternity.”
Faculty members, too, must sign a pledge stating they share a generally literalist belief in the Bible. Revealingly, only biology and theology teachers are required to hold a literal view specifically of the Bible’s six-day creation story. Bonicelli has stated, “I think the most important thing is our academic excellence, [and the fact that we] combine it with a serious statement about our faith and values … I believe in six literal days, but I remain open to someone persuading me otherwise.”

This is certainly consistent with this view of bush and is a perfectly good reason to toss out both bushies and government as we know it. It is simply too risky to have so powerful an institution susceptible to occupancy by bushies or, for that matter, the other 535 534(click through).

Update: Kip noted in a comment that bonicelli was not appointed director. I fixed that. Kip also points out that bonicelli has a more extensive resume than implied above. You can read more here but I’m still not impressed.

Update: I just got around to reading Julian Sanchez’s review having previously bookmarked it until I’d seen the movie due to some spoilers:

Of course, you don’t have to have read Camus, or even be fond of berets or clove cigarettes, to be a fan of Serenity. The film’s genius is that it works on so many levels—political, philosophical, and (not least) narrative. If you show up in theaters just looking for a tightly plotted, smartly scripted sci-fi action flick, you’ll come away happy. For the attentive viewer, though, Serenity is not just a string of good chase scenes, but an “absurd reasoning,” a surprisingly profound meditation on what freedom means—both in politics and, perhaps more importantly, as a source of personal meaning.

Excuse Me, But WTF?

This surely must be made up:

The Pentagon, acting under instructions from Vice President Dick Cheney’s office, has tasked the United States Strategic Command (STRATCOM) with drawing up a contingency plan to be employed in response to another 9/11-type terrorist attack on the United States. The plan includes a large-scale air assault on Iran employing both conventional and tactical nuclear weapons.

Hopefully The American Conservative made this up just to sell subscriptions (and Yglesias now wants a comp sub).
If this is true it damned well better be about the 10 millionth option. But, the bushies know that their credibility is pretty well shot so if they are going to take out Iran they need something big on which to base their action, something that they can pretend requires a quick response not the long brainwashing that occurred prior to the invasion of Iraq.
But, WTF, We’ve got both the chinese government and possibly now the us government talking about using nukes??? And some of you think these governments as currently constituted are good things???

On a day that Americans celebrate Independence Lynn Kiesling reminds us that it is important to know our rights and that:

Governments are institutions that are human artifices that justly exist to protect these natural rights, and when governments fail to protect those natural rights, then citizens have a right to rebel against that government.

Are you ready to go to Arnold, Missouri or stand on Angel Raich’s doorstep to turn back the the minions of an illegitimate government?
If not in Missouri or California then in your own community. There are plenty of places to take a stand and turn back the tide.

Most children learn the right lesson much better than the 5 who supported theft in Keno and, in fact, better than the founders:

The most important fact in all this childhood drama was simply that I wanted something that was not mine, and without the consent of the owner, nothing I could do would make that thing morally mine, and as long as my parents were my parents, nothing I could do would make it physically mine, either.

A constitution that respects individuals will not contain a takings clause but rather it is clear that it needs to be a blocking clause something along the line of

nor shall private property be taken for public use, without the consent of the owner.

The mafia might object but not an entity intended to protect its citizens.
