Bernie’s Supreme Court Litmus Test

Bernie Sanders seems to think that he has the solution to a problem in American politics:

Sanders pointed out that if Americans put him the White House, this could be the last election controlled by the billionaire class.

“If elected president, I will have a litmus test in terms of my nominee to be a Supreme Court justice,” he remarked. “And that nominee will say that we are going to overturn this disastrous Supreme Court decision on Citizens United. Because that decision is undermining American democracy. I do not believe that billionaires should be able to buy politicians.”

Dear Bernie, Citizens United is not the problem, just a symptom. Aside from the fact that it addressed corporations not individual billionaires overturning it will not begin to address the basic systemic problem: the very existence of corporations, the very existence of a system that mints billionaires while others sleep on the streets.

Bernie, f you really wanted to address the problem that you suggest exists you would, inter alia:

  • advocate for the elimination of corporations
  • advocate for the elimination of all legislation that has led to or would lead to any type of monopoly protection And, most importantly,
  • advocate for a restriction on any legislative ability, at any level of government, to enact any legislation that provides any economic advantage of any kind to any individual or group of individuals.

Putting a patch on a broken system does not fix the system.
